This is an early iteration of the Thos. Moser interpretation of a Windsor chair. I bought it new from Tom himself at his shop in the old Grange Hall in New Gloucester Maine in October 1982. Although it has been in regular use in my home for more than 43 years, it shows very little signs of wear. All joints are tight, and there are no serious dings in the wood. There is a burn mark on one leg that was there when I bought it. The seat is solid cherry; spindles are ash.
These first-generation armchairs were less robust than newer models, which are now designed to stand up to commercial use. They differ in three important ways: the continuous arm is more delicate, about 5/8" to 3/4" in diameter instead of a full inch; the legs are maple instead of ash; and there are no braces on the front legs.
