Antique black & white photograph of a woman driving a horse & buggy taken on Main Street Chatham MA after the street was cleared from a blizzard. The photo shows the large volume of snow from the storm and was probably taken during the Blizzard of 1888 – which dropped 4.5 feet of snow in the Northeast. The woman in the photo is Ellora Bloomer, the wife of Francisca Bloomer, as per document found behind picture frame (document is also posted on CL)
Note: Plowing snow in the late 1800’s was done by horse-drawn snow-plows attached to a horse-drawn cart and pulled through the streets while pushing the snow into banks on either side of the roadway leaving large mounds of snow.
Family History Found in Typed Document on Back of Frame – Written in 1980:
Francisca Nelson Bloomer who lived off Silver Leaf Avenue, the other side of Mrs. Brown. His wife was Elinora (actual spelling is ‘Ellora’). He was the son of William & Hannah Patterson. He has a son Nelson F. who has a daughter, May, who is still living in Old Orchard Beach, Maine (1980). Her name is Blanche and lives with her daughter, Eleanor Grady. There is also another daughter, Viola.
Great piece of Cape Cod history captured on camera!
