Ancient handcrafted in Persia C 1700's, EASTERN ORTHODOX COPPER Foot-Washing Pitcher w/ Greek Writing & Symbols Etchings - "Elan Zito Ma Xi Rho" - "Christ, May He Prosper!!"
This is an Ancient handcrafted Eastern Orthodox water pitcher used for the foot washing ritual during Easter Week. It most likely found it's way to Cape Cod by way of and antique dealer, collector, or Greek Orthodox church.
The GREEK inscription "Elan Zito Ma Xi Rho", loosely translates to "Christ, May He Prosper!!!" Elan and Ma are very emphatic forms in Greek. So, the statement, "Elan Zito Ma Xi Rho" is something to be proclaimed, or shouted out. The symbol to the left side is a "Christian Tree of life (A cross is at the top of the tree) on the left. At the top of the "tree" on the right is a lily blossom.
The practice of foot washing is a ritual performed during Easter Week, usually on Thursday, in both the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church.
