ITEM DESCRIPTION: This primitive, slant lid desk was used by a Civil War Era officer or agent whose duty was to pay wages to troops. This type of desk needed to be portable, as they moved around to different battle fields. Is made of various woods, pine, mahogany, oak as
these were handmade from materials available. It has wonderful patina. The slant lid has a compartment under, on the inside, which probably held roll call papers. Bottom has a pull out drawer and interior has five compartment drawers. Sides and back have recessed panels. Cast iron handles. In excellent condition considering it is over 160 years old and has seen many a battlefield. There was probably a lock at one time. Has some charming, minor repairs. There is a split in the wood on top. Has period wear and patina consistent with age and use. No serious damage.
