Hello, My name is Wayne Mercier. My wife and I live in New Concord Ohio. We raised calves for about 8-9 years on our small farm. This past summer I became ill with a liver disease. I'm not able to keep up with our farm any longer, we sold and auctioned off almost eveything we could.

I dont have any health insurance. We went to Jobs & Family Services & applied for SSDI. Tamara my wife is working as many hours as she can, her pay just doesn't cover all of our bills and buy food, toiletries and other items needed to live.

Someone set up a benefit account in hopes of getting people to donate what they can to help us out. I am posting this in hopes of finding others out here who are willing and able to donate what they can to help us pay on these medical bills, everyday bills and buy food. Even just a few dollars would help.

Any kind of donations would be greatly appreciated. The benefit account is set up at the New Concord Huntington National Bank under "Wayne Mercier Benefit Account" account # ending with these last four digits (5366)
Bank manager "Derrick Gingerich" (740) 826-4455
If you would like to speak to me personally, call (740) 260-6619

We feel bad asking for help, but dont know any other way.

Send An Angel Needs Angels To Adopt Families This Christmas (USA)

Would You Like To Be A Secret Christmas Angel To A Child In Need?

Send An Angel is in desprate need of Angels to help needy families. I began taking applications for Holiday Assistance on Oct 1st and have had 58 families from six states who have been adopted for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. I am no longer accepting applications for assistance but still have families who are in need of an Angel to help with Christmas gifts for their little ones.

Below is a list of Cities and States where there are families in need and information on how you can help these families. If you would like to help a family through Send An Angel with Christmas please email send.an.angel.donors@gmail.com to request an updated listing or application.

Families in Need of Help w/ Christmas

New Jersey, Tuckerton Boys ages 10 & 16 Girls ages 14, 16, 17

New Jersey, Waretown Boy age 12

Once the donor chooses a family they then have two options.

1: Contact the family they are helping and proceed with the adoption on their own.

or

2: Be a Secret Angel
If the donor chooses to be a secret angel then Send me an angel will contact the family on the donors behalf with any questions they have for their adopted family.

Holiday gifts can me made in what ever form the donor is comfortable with. Most donors mail gift cards. While others order gifts online and have them shipped to the family or purchase gifts wrap them and mail or even personally deliver them if they are able to find a family local to them.

There are two types of adoptions Full Adoptions and Partial Adoptions

Full adoption is at least 3 gifts per child and the family is removed from the list

Partial adoption is 1-2 gifts per child or a filled stocking per child and the family is eligible to be partially adopted again

There is no limit to the amount of gifts you can send the family and no minimum or maximum amount that has to be spent. If you can only afford to spend a small amount but want to fully adopt it is ok to shop at discount stores like family dollar or to regift new unopened toys or clothing that have been sitting in your own childs closet since last christmas. On the other hand if you want to make an event of it and hold a toy or gift card drive at your place of employment or local club that is accectable to. You will find that the family you help is greatfull to receive any help offered no matter how small or large.

If you would like more information please email any questions to send.an.angel.donors@gmail.com

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KNIT, CROCHET & SEW CHEMO CAPS (CAPE COD & SURROUNDING AREAS)

My name is Cassie and I reside in central New Hampshire.

I have a group - SHE Creations (Stitching Heaven & Earth) - of wonderful volunteers from various States who are volunteering their time to knitting, crocheting and sewing chemo caps for those going through tough times.

650,000 people are diagnosed every year with cancer. 240,000 are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

Most commerical caps are made for heads with hair and made with a wool and wool/blend yarn which can be a great discomfort to chemo patients as they can be scratchy and irritating.

The chemo caps must be warm and soft, using an acrylic, polyster, cotton yarn. If sewn; polyester, cotton, synthetic fleece (very warm and soft).

If made seamless make great sleep caps.

Cancer treatment centers are very appreciative to receive these caps for their patients and more so the patients themselves.....women, children and men.

ALL caps are donated to these centers and the group is 100% volunteer.

If this is something you feel you would like to be a part of, I look forward to receiving your email whereby I will reply as promptly as possible with further information and details.

I thank you in advance!!!!!! and look forward to hearing from you.

Do something meaningful this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod is organizing a volunteer event that focuses on helping the food pantries on Cape Cod. We are looking for YOU to volunteer.

Volunteer tasks include:

AmeriCorps Cape Cod is recruiting volunteers to join us for the day from 12:00pm till 4:00pm.

Century 21 Sam Ingram Real Estate launches “A Gift that Lasts Beyond the Holidays” Campaign to benefit MSPCC Families during this season of giving.

Century 21 Sam Ingram Real Estate is partnering with MSPCC - The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Cape Cod offices to launch “A Gift that Lasts Beyond the Holidays” campaign to collect and provide gifts for many local families in need.
MSPCC is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been on Cape Cod since 1915 working to strengthen families and prevent child abuse through effective public advocacy, essential parent support and education program and comprehensive mental health services.
The caring professionals at Century 21 Sam Ingram Real Estate have opened a donation center in their office located at 938 Route 6A, Yarmouthport (next to Oliver’s restaurant) for everyone who wants to give “A Gift that Lasts Beyond the Holidays.”

We have collected wish lists from local families at MSPCC who would appreciate your support during this season of giving.
When it comes to families who are struggling, a Holiday Wish List often consists of basic items like food, heat, winter clothing, a twin bed or a bookcase.
Some of the families’ “dream items” include a membership at the YMCA or local community Centers in Hyannis, Falmouth, Harwich, Bourne… a movie pass for the family…skating at the new Hyannis Youth Center…a uniform and membership with the local Scout Troop…school vacation passes to Willy’s Gym…items that parents can not afford due to these difficult financial times.

Call 508-362-1196 or 800-676-3340 to find out what you can do to make a child’s holiday an extra special this year. Stop by now through December 20th to drop off a donation or a gift chosen from one of the participating family member’s wish list.
Please join Century 21 Sam Ingram Real Estate and MSPCC by giving “A Gift that Lasts Beyond the Holidays” campaign. It’s a great way to give back to our community by supporting those in need. Thank you!

“Holiday Mail for Heroes” to Deliver One Million Greetings to Service Members and Families

As part of a national campaign, the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is participating in a “Holiday Mail for Heroes” card drive. The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. are teaming up to send holiday cards to members of the military and their families in the United States and around the world. From Monday, November 2 until Monday, December 7, the public is invited to send holiday cards with their message of thanks and cheer to a special post office box.

The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will then screen cards for hazardous materials, sort and package the cards, and deliver them to military bases, veteran’s hospitals and military hospitals during the holidays. “Holiday Mail for Heroes” continues the Red Cross tradition of service to the armed forces. Last year, 1.4 million cards were distributed.

Sending just one card is all it takes to make a difference by spreading holiday cheer and thanks to one of our nation’s heroes. There are currently 1.4 million active duty U.S. military men and women serving in our country and abroad. In addition, there are 24 million veterans in the U.S.

Holiday cards should be addressed and sent to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

Please be sure to affix adequate postage. Keep the salutation generic, such as: Dear Service member or Veteran. Do not include personal information and please do not send letters. If you’d like to send more than one card, please bundle them and mail them in a package. Cards must be received no later than December 8th (postmarked December 7th). Cards received after this date will be returned to senders. To help speed the sorting process and delivery of cards and notes before the holidays, please refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary gifts, using glitter or including any other inserts.

In order to make cards more meaningful to a wide variety of recipients, those sending cards are highly encouraged to use “Dear Service Member or Veteran” rather than specific language. We encourage the public to send holiday-neutral cards rather than religious-themed cards. For a full list of recommended guidelines and best practices, please visit Redcross.org/holiday mail. Cards are also available to print out from the website, along with messages from Red Cross National Celebrity Amy Grant.

The American Red Cross is a charitable organization - not a government agency - and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission. You can also write to: American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, 286 South Street, Hyannis MA 02601.

American Red Cross Launches New Holiday Giving Campaign Featuring ‘Gifts that Save the Day’ Online Catalog

This holiday season, when economic conditions are tough and people really want their gifts to matter, the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, American Red Cross is kicking off a new holiday campaign that offers a way to give a gift that has real impact.

Gifts that Save the Day is a new holiday giving campaign that inspires people to make a gift that can save the day for those in need. Through the online catalog at www.redcross.org/gifts, people can make a donation that could provide food and shelter for a disaster victim for a day; a military comfort kit with a robe, phone card and other supplies for a wounded warrior; or a month of basic necessities for a family in another country who lost everything in a disaster.

“These have been turbulent economic times for the Red Cross and other non-profits, with more and more people seeking help,” said Glen Beasley. “The Red Cross is working very hard to raise money now so the organization can be there tomorrow with help and hope when people need it most — when the next disaster strikes, when a neighbor’s house burns down or when someone needs life-saving blood.”

The holiday giving campaign is being launched at a time when a new national survey for the American Red Cross finds that support for charitable giving remains strong even as many people are tightening their belts on gift-buying and other activities. The Red Cross survey found that 29 percent are cutting back on money spent on holiday gifts, 31 percent are planning to spend less for parties this year, 40 percent are cutting back on spending for holiday decorations, and 44 percent are reducing their travel costs. However, only 20 percent planned cuts in their donations to charity, with 17 percent planning to spend more and 62 percent planning to spend the same.

The survey, conducted November 5-8, shows that nearly one in four (23%) had their salary or hours reduced this year, with 14 percent saying they had been laid off from their job and 41 percent losing money in the stock market. However, 67 percent say that because of the economy, it is more important this year to give something to charity.

Although retail sales are projected to remain flat this holiday season, online holiday gift-giving is expected to grow by 4 percent. Following this trend, people buying gifts online this holiday season can make an online donation to the Red Cross in the name of someone special.

Gifts made through the catalog are contributions towards a Red Cross program area, not a donation to a specific project or item. The donations will be used to provide assistance where it is needed most within the program area; remaining money is put to use where it is needed most.

The telephone survey of 1,001 U.S. adults 18 years and older was conducted November 5-8, 2009 by CARAVAN® Opinion Research Corporation. The margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

Red Cross Volunteers Respond to Fire on Martha’s Vineyard

Hyannis, MA, November 24, 2009 – Three Island Red Cross volunteers Bill Howell, Shelley Christiansen, Sharry Stevens-Grunden, with assistance from Cape Cod volunteers Jonathan O’Neil, Dave Pollock, and Terri Tarozzi, responded to an early morning fire in Edgartown, MA this November. The fire occurred in a duplex and affected a total of nine people. These volunteers were able to provide victims with clothing, toys, first aid kits and comfort kits.

The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter recently trained 12 Disaster Action Team Members on the Island in collaboration with the community school held at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is in the process of launching a $58,000 initiative to support Martha’s Vineyard Red Cross Service Delivery Operations, expand its number of volunteers on the Island and increase shelter supplies.

This Preparedness Initiative will benefit every resident on the Island. The ultimate success of the initiative will be measured by having Red Cross volunteers trained, equipped and ready to operate disaster response shelters and the community to be prepared to respond to local emergencies if the need arises.

In recent years the Chapter has ensured each community on Martha’s Vineyard is equipped to shelter 48 people. A Red Cross response trailer with materials to support 100 evacuees is positioned on the island. In addition, the Chapter has provided an Emergency Response Vehicle to Martha’s Vineyard. All Disaster Relief Support is provided free of charge and the Chapter is actively pursuing donor and foundation funds to support the Preparedness Initiative for and by Martha’s Vineyard.

For more information about the Martha’s Vineyard Preparedness Initiative, to become a volunteer or to get trained, both through the web training program or in person, please contact the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, 286 South Street, Hyannis, MA 02601 or via www.cciredcross.org or toll-free at (508) 775-1540.

NOTE: All disaster relief support provided by the American Red Cross is free of charge. The Chapter does not receive government funding. It is totally dependent upon local support from foundations, individuals and businesses. A gift of any size to the American Red Cross will save the day when the next disaster strikes. When a neighbor’s house burns down. When someone needs lifesaving blood transfusion. When a family needs to contact a deployed service member in an emergency. When a child needs a hug and a blanket. The gift that saves the day is the gift you give today. Your gift supports the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross in your community, across the country and around the world.

40 Red Cross Volunteers Participate in Regional Sheltering Simulation (Sandwich)

40 Red Cross Volunteers Participate in Regional Sheltering Simulation in Sandwich

Some 40 Red Cross Disaster Action Team Members with the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, American Red Cross, participated in the second Regional Sheltering Exercise in Sandwich. Seven Rhode Island and Mass Bay Chapter volunteers came to observe and learn.

This exercise was held at the Oak Ridge Elementary School, one of six regional shelters identified by the Barnstable County Emergency Management Team. This was the second time that multiple agencies collaborated to offer a regional full-service shelter including a special area to shelter pets. The Red Cross volunteers managed the registration of several volunteers who played the role of ‘disaster affected-clients’. They organized the shelter for people, set up dormitories, fed approximately 150 people and offered a health services and mental health component for the day.

The overall goal of the exercise, which lasted five hours, was to test the ability of the volunteers to get the shelter up and running and test the functionality of the elements of a regional full-service shelter. This regional shelter simulation was the second held on Cape Cod in the past year and plans are underway to test all other regional shelters within the next few months.

Glen Beasley, Executive Director of the the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, American Red Cross said: “ I was pleased by how our volunteers organized the actual sheltering and operations, which includes formally operating the shelter, and providing mass care and feeding. In total including other response agencies some 150 volunteers and other staff were on hand during this day”.

Ron Santos, Town of Sandwich Emergency Management Deputy Director and the Branch Shelter Manager for this drill said: “I was very satisfied by the performance of all the agencies involved with this drill. A lot of preplanning was done to make this work. I want to thank all of the volunteers and staff from all agencies involved for a job well done”.

One of the elements of a full-service shelter includes being able to provide shelter for pets, organized by the Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team (CCDART). What the various agencies experienced in past emergencies is that some residents have been reluctant to leave for shelters because they don’t want to leave their pets. Currently three out of the six regional shelters can accommodate pets but the plan calls for all six shelters to have this capability.

For this disaster simulation, the pet shelter was staffed by 13 CCDART trained volunteers. They organized the pet shelter, set up a pet registration area, and provided a secure shelter for a potential of 65 dogs, 50 cats, and 16 small domestic pets.

Other agencies participating were: Coordination/Planning: Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC). The Barnstable County Incident Management Team (IMT), which is responsible for the planning and command over the exercise, drawn from members of the BCREPC and responsible for managing the regional sheltering plan. Also on hand were: Public Safety officials (Sandwich, Bourne, Mashpee and West Barnstable Fire and Police), the Sandwich Citizens Police Academy, Sandwich Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), working under the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department and staffing a variety of positions for multiple organizations at the exercise. Finally, staff from the Oak Ridge Elementary School was in attendance to help with setting up and breaking down of the simulation and storing the materials used.

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) supported communications, organizing communications within the shelter as well as to the outside world should cell phones and other phones are out of commission.

During past national and regional disasters, the Red Cross, BCREPC and other agencies learned that it is easier to manage full-service regional shelters rather than multiple small shelters for small numbers of people—to make the most efficient use of human and material resources. These six regional shelters can currently handle 3,000 people, or 500 per shelter. When fully resourced, the combined capacity will be 6,000, or 1,000 per shelter. Through the Cape Cod Traffic Plan, the Mass Military Reservation (MMR) can shelter an additional 3,000 people.

Regional shelters allow for enough food, water, supplies and supporting resources to provide quality care to all potential users of the shelters. They allow for the sheltering of pets, and transportation is available for those in need. In addition volunteer medical personnel will be available to address basic, general and special medical needs at the site. Finally, there will be coordinated safety, logistics and communications through local police and fire departments, ARES, other local and regional safety agencies working together to support the sheltering operations, ensure the public’s safety, and facilitate essential communications.

The regional sheltering plan is designed to complement local, town management of emergency resources. Local and community shelters can open at any time. In an emergency, each town’s Emergency Management Director makes decisions independently on deploying emergency resources, in coordination with regional authorities.

The Cape Cod and Islands Chapter has just trained two Disaster Volunteer Teams of 12 each on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and is working towards a Disaster Response Capacity Plan on both islands. The goal will be to increase shelter capacity, recruit and train additional Response volunteers and to collaborate with local government and other response agencies to implement a major shelter location on each islands should a disaster occur.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help disaster-affected clients on Cape Cod and the Islands by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Local Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those affected by a disaster. On those rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve those affected by other disasters. Contributions to the Local Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter at 286 South Street, Hyannis, MA 02601. Tel. (508) 775-1540. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting cciredcross.org
