I can't get a new pet permanently, but if anybody wants to loan me their cat, dog, or any other pet (preferably not a snake...) then I'd be thrilled!

Maybe you're coming to rent a pet-free cottage for a week, and need a home for your pet?

I love animals, and they love me. I have a very free schedule, and plan to spend hours playing with and caring for whatever animal I can find.

My top choice would be a small dog, since my grandmother isn't fond of huge dogs. I also would like a cat, but I know cats aren't as good at adjusting to new places. Anything smaller would be fun as well.

I have heard potential adopters say that a shelter worker will just try to sell people any pet (and not inform the adopters of potential problems) However, all GOOD shelter's will try to help you choose a good match for your family. They want a good match as they do not want a pet to have to come back as it is stressful for the pet (and adopters).

Perhaps you are having difficulty with the shelters because you are looking for a Pit Bull or American Bulldog and you have kids...shelters are afraid a big, muscular, energetic dog may knock over a child and hurt them unintentionally. Maybe if you have veternary references from your previous dogs and/or promise to complete basic training (which all dogs should have anyway) with your dog, there will be a change of heart.

We too have had Pit Bulls with our children...they are fantastic family dogs. But they can be very boisterous as pup's. Please reconsider working with a local shelter on finding a dog that will suit your family.

Lastly, any idiot that is breeding Pit Bulls does NOT care about the breed. as only 1 in 600 finds a life long home. That means 599 do not get placed in family homes for 12-14 years. Instead they end up in irresponsible homes, or are ethanized due to lack of family homes. It wasn't a problem until most recently, and I am trying to find out if there are triggers for his aggressive actions? I had a AuCaDo owner and his dog approach me and mine in my car. My dog was freaking out, jumped out the driver's side window and proceeded to attack his smaller AuCado. He grabbed my dog by the collar and growled at him until he sat and obeyed. I was extremley appalled that this Blue Heeler owner thought it was okay to just come up to my car without his dog on a leash. My car is scratched- my nerves shot- and I kepy telling the man to stop and leave us to our walk. He told me "You just have to know how to handle them, if they think you need protecting, they will attack other people and animals". I was pissed that this guy almost caused me a heart attack, our dogs could've been hurt, and he had the nerve to be "alpha" with my dog. I would love to meet other AuCaDo owners, but absolutley NOT in this way. I appriciated his calm and friendly approach, but I am terrified of my dog around anybody-- none the less ANOTHER aggressive and protective AuCaDo!

My problem most recently is his nipping. He has moved from a home where only me, my boyfriend, and one roommate who was rarley home were living into a home where me, my boyfriend, and 2 other male roommates are regularly around. I have a feeling he is confused by this addition of people and who is leader of the "pack". When my boyfriend and I aren't home the roommates assume positions of dominance when he is told to sit before going out to play-- or told to back off and not beg. My boyfriend seems to think that this is confusing him and he is supposed to be a "one-man-dog". How can we get him to stop trying to assume dominance over other house-members? Or is there any way to keep him from defending his territory (our house) from intruders (our friends)?

I have contacted the AKC for insight-- and they recommended I contact my Vet's office. I'd rather speak with other owners who have had personal experiences with this.

Also-- I'd love to know any other owners with aggressive dogs. Where can I go in the Orleans Area that I will not likley run into other dogs? He is fine with people, doesn't pay any attention to them as he passes. But I have tried to take him for runs/swims and it seems impossible to avoid other dogs (likley to be unleashed). Any secret spots?

I encourage you to reconsider adopting a dog from a shelter. In these days when people are losing their homes and surrendering their animals, the shelters are bursting with deserving dogs. Someone else has already gone to the trouble of teaching them not to pee on the floor, jump on strangers, and so on. Wouldn't you rather pay attention to your kids than spend your time training a dog?

I'm sure the local shelters can help you find a young dog that's been trained, loves kids, and deserves more from its human guardians than euthanasia.

On a personal note, I recently adopted a dog whose owners lost their home. And there has never been a sweeter, more well-behaved, and delightful dog. During the time of the year when dogs are prohibited from their favorite places here on the Cape, Hot Diggity in Mashpee is sponsoring DOGS ALLOWED. A non-profit event for dogs, about dogs and with dogs. The Village Green at Mashpee Commons is where you will want to be on Saturday, July 19, 2008 from 10am - 5pm. There is a $5 entrance fee for humans, dogs are free. All proceeds will be donated to The Sampson Fund: helping people in need pay for vet expenses.


A variety of performances and activities are scheduled throughout the day. Plan on seeing doggie dancing by Capering Canines of Cape Cod, and a special demonstration by the Barnstable County Sheriff's K-9 Unit. You can also watch a dazzling red carpet fashion show, with Puparazzi Amy Rader who will capture the models on film. Don't forget the crowd favorites: an agility demonstration, a retriever race and the trick contest, where dogs will show off their talents and wow the crowd.


Feel like joining in the fun? Bring Rover on over to the Kissing Booth, Ask The Trainer about that behavior you have been wondering about, hop on over to the Busy Station where you and your pup will perform side by side, or enter some of the games to win prizes. Be sure to visit Dr. Goffi, who will be holding a microchip clinic where $25 will get your pup a microchip and will also register him, and then make a quick stop for nail trimming and ear washing.


When you get hungry, refreshments will be available for you and your pup. Give Rover a chance to drink some spring water, then grab a dog (a hot dog that is) and head over to enter the raffle. You could win anything from gift baskets to gift certificates. Listen to the music provided by DJ Ben Perry while mingling with other dog lovers. Be sure to chat with our volunteers about the all-natural ingredients in the free samples of dog food they'll be handing out.

One cute kitten ready to go. He's a sweet tiger tabby looking thing with a white chest and feet. He is box trained, eats kitten chow, drinks water, loves to cuddle up to your body while you sleep. Very playful all day long.
